Reiki is a Japanese relaxation and stress reduction technique that eventually leads to a healing process. Reiki, however, should always be used in conjunction with other healing modalities and not used as the only or primary means of promoting healing. In fact, a Reiki treatment need not be intended for healing at all. It is ideally suited for simply providing a feeling of well-being and peace. It provides a perfect means of treating the body, mind and spirit and thus promoting wellness. Reiki is natural and safe and can never have any harmful side effects. The effects of a Reiki treatment are intuitive in that the energy automatically goes to the place it is needed most. A Reiki treatment generally involves the "laying on of hands" by a practitioner who has received the ability to tap into the Reiki force from another master who in turn has received his ability from his master in a direct lineage from Master Mikao Usui, the Japanese discoverer of Reiki (Dr Gilbert's Lineage). This process of passing-down the ability to apply Reiki energy is known as an "attunement". Reiki is not a religion, so the beliefs of the practitioner or the client do not make a difference in the outcome of the Reiki treatment. Reiki is not dependent on one's intellect or spiritual development. Intent is more important than technique or belief. In fact, Reiki is not taught, as such, but transferred to the practitioner by the attunement. Reiki is based on the idea that there is a "life force energy" which is unseen but infuses everything. This energy flows through us and around us. If your life force energy is low, you may have more of a tendency to be sick or stressful. On the other hand, a high level of life force energy generally results in being healthy, happy, secure, and having a feeling of overall well-being. The life force energy is everywhere and it is what connects us with each other and with other animals. It even connects us with inanimate objects. Everything has the life force energy flowing through it. This makes possible distance treatments and attunements. The primary requirement is not necessarily proximity but an intent to effect a specific outcome. In Western Reiki there generally are three levels or degrees possessed by Reiki practitioners. First Degree practitioners are given attunements which give them the ability to treat themselves. Upon receiving the Second Degree, the Reiki practitioner is given the ability to treat others as well as himself. The highest level practitioner is the Third Degree Master or Teacher. A Reiki master can treat himself and others, but also has the ability to pass attunements to others making them First, Second or Third Degree practitioners. Dr. Gilbert received his Reiki training and Master Teacher attunement from Richard Morningstar. The following is Dr. Gilbert's Usui Reiki Lineage:
